Overview

El Molcajete, nestled in the heart of the Bronx on Westchester Avenue, is a vibrant Mexican restaurant that beautifully captures the rich flavors and traditions of authentic Mexican cuisine. Known for its signature dish, the Molcajete—a sizzling blend of tender meats, fresh vegetables, and melted cheese served in a traditional stone mortar—this eatery delivers an experience that feels genuine and heartfelt.

The menu offers a captivating array of traditional and regional specialties. From classics like Lengua en Salsa Verde and Chicken Fajitas to the refreshing horchata and robust michelada, the restaurant appeals to diverse taste preferences. Their attention to fresh, house-made tortillas and dips—like the poblano cheese dip and fresh guacamole—sets the stage for an authentic and flavorful journey, enhancing every meal.

El Molcajete’s soups and caldos also deserve special mention. Options like Menudo and Caldo 7 Mares showcase not only depth in flavor but also a connection to Mexican culinary heritage. These dishes, coupled with hearty appetizers and carefully crafted beverages, create a well-rounded menu that caters to both traditionalists and those eager to explore new tastes.

The atmosphere is inviting and warm, catering equally to families, groups of friends, and solo diners. The staff’s friendliness and patience enhance the dining experience, making every visit comfortable and enjoyable. Although parking is limited and can be challenging due to meter restrictions, the quality of food and service more than make up for the inconvenience.

Community feedback highlights the restaurant’s strengths—particularly the excellence in tacos and steak dishes, praised for their freshness and bold flavors. The bar area, while welcoming, could benefit from a bit more polish in cocktail preparation. Vegetarian options stand out as well, with thoughtfully prepared vegetable tacos featuring ingredients like cactus and string beans, proving that El Molcajete embraces inclusivity in its menu design.

This is not just a place to eat; it’s a place to experience Mexican culture and conviviality. Whether you're seeking a comfortable spot for family gatherings, a casual meal with friends, or a solo culinary adventure, El Molcajete offers an engaging space that respects tradition while inviting exploration.

For those craving authentic Mexican cuisine with deep flavors and a lively ambiance in the Bronx, El Molcajete remains a standout destination.

This place is definitely the best Mexican restaurant in the Bronx. I have been to other places including some in New Rochelle and Yonkers in this place by far has the best steak, chicken, and Mexican sausage tacos. Not to mention their steak nachos and enchiladas. I also saw some amazing sea food plates but I’m not a big fan if it ain’t fired fish or shrimps. They might want to improve in their bar area in terms of mixing drinks. But over all the taste is amazing. Yes it’s family oriented as well as single or if you’re with friends. Unfortunately they don’t have parking. Parking might be a little hard due to meter parking but definitely worth it

It can be hard to find good vegetarian in Soundview, but El Molcajete has great choices for everyone. As soon as they brought the salsa (fresh and watery, not like Pace Chunky from a jar) I knew this was going to be good. I got the vegetable tacos and queso asada tacos and both were fresh and delicious with real vegetables like broccoli, carrots, string beans, and I think some cactus. Really tasty. My brother got something that looked like a round sandwich with beef tongue in it and reported that it was also excellent and a bit spicy (in a good way). We will definitely be going back!

I approve everything, I came with my family on a Friday, September 6 2024, a karaoke night. I don’t usually order anything but a torta or a cemita, those just have something that gets me, they always so good. But today as I went in, my brother specifically got buffalo wings and he asked all of us if we wanted some to try, we all took one (by we all I mean me and my family) as soon as I take a bite of the wing, I did not approve. I loved everything I’ve tried from my family’s plates, but the buffalo wings. I liked everything and I enjoyed it awesomely as I bet everyone did too. All I will say is that the buffalo wings should be getting improved. Besides that, everything was fine, staff are kind, friendly and patient.

Cool spot for a beer and some tacos. Bartenders are kind and service is always excellent. The Burrito with everything is definitely filling. Cozy place, if you’re in the Soundview area, check it out.
